Louis Janus Book Subvention Award
ABOUT LOUIS JANUS
The Louis Janus Book Subvention award is named for longtime University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, professor Louis Janus (1948–2024), an active supporter of SASS throughout his long and illustrious career.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Louis Janus book subvention accepts applications with three annual deadlines. Tenured and tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track faculty, independent scholars, and emeritus faculty who are members of SASS in good standing are eligible to apply. Up to three subventions of as much as $3000 will be awarded per year. The goal of the subvention is to encourage publication of research monographs in Nordic studies by assisting publishers with production costs. Edited article collections are not eligible for consideration, but translations into English of significant scholarship as well as works of literature originally published in a Nordic language will be considered. To receive the award, the author and press must agree to print on the title page of the funded book, “Supported by the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study.” Merit of the proposal and the applicant’s record of substantive service to SASS will be taken into consideration in the assessment of each application.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
The evaluation committee is made up of three members of SASS appointed by the SASS executive council. Committee members serve staggered three-year terms, beginning on April 1 and ending on March 31. Members of the inaugural book subvention committee are Professor Emerita Jennifer Eastman Attebery (Idaho State; term ending 2028), Professor Thomas Dubois (Wisconsin; term ending 2029), and Professor Emerita Rochelle Wright (Illinois; term ending 2027). Committee members may be appointed for one additional term.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants should submit a letter of application (two pages or less) describing the manuscript and requesting a subvention amount. The application should also include a copy of the press contract, and a letter/email from a representative of the press stating the expected date of publication, the need for the subvention, and the amount requested. The applicant should also include an updated copy of their curriculum vitae. These documents should be submitted via the form linked below.
Deadlines are March 1 (up to 2 awards), June 1 (1 or 2 awards), and October 1 (remaining award budget as available). Notice of awards will be provided to applicants by March 15, June 15, and October 15. Awards will be publicly announced in News & Notes. If subvention funds are exhausted in a calendar year, applicants may request to have their application evaluated in the next calendar year.
