Baldwin Language Fellowship

The Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study invites applications for a language fellowship. The fellowship is made possible by the Birgit Baldwin Endowment. The recipient will be known as the Birgit Baldwin Language Fellow. Entry into Scandinavian Studies requires strong knowledge of a Nordic language, and many students have trouble accessing study opportunities. The scholarship provides $9000 to support learning a Nordic language.

To apply you must be:

  • An undergraduate student who does not have the opportunity to study a Nordic language at your home institution OR
  • An intended applicant to an MA or PhD program in Scandinavian Studies who does not yet meet the language skills requirement

Students from groups underrepresented in SASS are especially encouraged to apply. Students who have long term professional interests in working with Nordic studies for a career will be given priority. Students already undertaking advanced study will not be given priority, except in cases where they intend to study a less commonly taught Nordic language (e.g., a Sámi language or Kalaallisut).

Timeline:

  • Applications will be accepted up until March 4th
  • An announcement will be made by March 15th

Applicants should be prepared to submit the following:

  • A letter (1,000 words or less) that answers the following questions:
    • Why are you interested in studying a particular Nordic language?
    • How do you plan to use that language in your educational and/or professional life?
    • What is your proposed course of study, and/or what are your expenses related to the fellowship (e.g., course enrollment fees, tutor wages, travel expenses)?
    • How has diversity played a role in your studies and/or shaped your interest in and access to studying a Nordic language?
  • A CV/Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Contact information for two references
    • Those named should be willing and prepared to share letters of recommendation, upon request
