Description: A number of 100-year anniversary events took place in 1917. For one, the United States entered World War I. Then the year was one of revolution in Russia. How were these larger events of world history reflected in developments in Scandinavia and indeed the larger Baltic Sea region? The most obvious example is the Finnish Declaration of Independence on Dec. 6, but there were others. The period was one of unprecedented activity by volunteer relief and aid organizations to provide assistance to large groups of people. How have literature, film, theater and the arts dealt with these events? The stream is not limited to 1917 but is open to the entire World War I period and the aftermath of the war. Panels and papers are welcome that explore both the impact and then reflections on these events in historical writing as well as in literature and the arts.
